As Migrants we come to Australia for a better life.

We make it our new home.

We leave behind family, friends, support systems and our culture.

Culture, a shared code of living is central to our life, identity and wellbeing.

The new country has new culture, new ways of living and new shared codes.

This information gap can give rise to misunderstandings and difficulties for migrants and the host society.

‘Mutual Cultural Resect’, fills this information gap for those not familiar with the social mores and norms of multicultural Australia.

Mutual Cultural Respect or MCR is an Australian culture sensitisation interactive workshop which aims to provide migrants with information regarding:

  • Australian culture, including information on social etiquettes and societal values;
  • the importance of diversity within Australias multicultural society;
  • services and helpful websites

In interactive discussion groups, the participants discuss issues such as gender etiquette, gender equality, domestic violence, bringing up teenage children, elder abuse, and through group discussion learn about the different expectations of different cultures and the way of living as practiced in multi-cultural Australia

ACHRH has conducted MCR in outreach workshops with migrants on different visa types. The results, evaluation and recommendations are presented in the report to be launched by The Hon Kevin Andrews MP.

This course was kindly funded by the Department of Social Services, Commonwealth of Australia.
